British Prime Minister Theresa May Announces Resignation

The British Prime Minister, Theresa May, on Friday, 24th May 2019, made a close to tears announcement of her resignation at a press conference outside 10 Downing street. The resignation will take effect on Friday, June 7th.

She will be a caretaker Prime Minster until the new conservative party leader is chosen. The new leader will automatically become Prime Minister without any need for a general election.

May became prime minister in July 2016. She took on the Conservative Party Leadership after David Cameron's resignation following the shock pro-Brexit referendum vote in a 2016. She was handed the task to see that the UK departure from European Union was a success.

May failed to get Parliament approval for European Union divorce deal. Seeing that her political fate was tied to the success of Brexit, She met with the conservative lawmakers where she was told to leave or face difficult challenges. Her embattled cabinet colleagues (members of her cabinet quitting) and their doubts about her Brexit bills plans made her eventually delay the plan to publish her fourth and final attempt for the European Withdrawal.

May said she had done her best to see the implementation of Brexit and regretted not having seen it through.
